There’s a lot to be said about interior British Columbia, Canada—the area below Calgary and above Eastern Washington is full of small towns and big mountains. No wonder it’s a favorite retreat for snowboarders—catboarding at Baldface Lodge especially. The Volcom crew and the TransWorld crew showed up at the lodge at the same time with the same goal, to check out and ride. No one really had an agenda other than strapping in and getting from the top to the bottom.
If you’ve never been catboarding, here’s how it works. You jump in a snowcat that usually holds around twelve people. Proceed up a groomed road (Baldface has about 32,000 acres accessed by roads), get out, strap in, and drop in. There’s a head guide who checks for snow stability and a tailguide who makes sure everyone makes it down. You meet up at the bottom of the run, and the cat is there to pick you up—snacks, water, bullshitting with friends on the way up—repeat all day long.
The terrain is definitely advance, leading from deep pow slopes into tight trees-and unlike heliboarding, there’s no such thing as a weather hold, so you’ve got to be in shape to ride consecutive days. It’s down and dirty snowboarding and should be on your to do list for next season.
